Description: Photographer’s credit in pencil in an unknown hand, with the “Perceptions” exhibition label annotated ‘88-D’ in ink, on reverse of the flush masonite mount.

Notes: This print was exhibited in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in the 1954 “Perceptions” show, which featured work by influential Bay Area photographers. From 1946 to 1954 Minor White was the head of the photography department at the San Francisco Art Institute (then known as the California School of Fine Arts). Lisette Model’s tenure as a guest instructor at the school in 1949 inspired him to experiment with “street photography. Under her influence he made a group of images that captured the tempo and spirit of San Francisco’s neighborhoods.
